Sight Saver International No person in Simga block of Raipur district Chhattisgarh state should be needlessly blind and those with irreversible blindness or low vision should have the same rights and access to services as their sighted counterparts & PWDs enjoy their rights and entitlements and participate equally in mainstream development processes June 2008 to Till date

Though government has various schemes and entitlements for disabled people, the experience says that most of the PWDs do not even have a valid disability certificate which enables them to avail the entitlements under these schemes. This is due to the lack of awareness about the rights of PWDs among the government officials and other key stakeholders.

Due to discrimination and apathy, PWDs live in circumstances of poverty, isolation and stigma. Their experiences have been exacerbated by the lack of services & facilities and vehement attitudinal barriers in all walks of life.

Considering above situation, and based on learning’s from the first CBR project partner [Grihini] has implemented various programmes in Simga block of Raipur district . The project proposes to strengthen the system involving government and other stakeholders for ensuring effective social inclusion of all PWDs in the project area. The project focusses on improving the participation of the PWDs in development programmes. The project strengthens capacities of PWDs for self-advocacy and helps them in improving their participation in mainstream Development processes. To achieve the goals various programs like Base line survey, Outreach diagnostic camps for surgeries, school screening & spectacles provide rehabilitation services, Resources mobiles awareness programme ,community meetings ,Primary health care training & orientation (AWW,ANM, school teacher, PRI members, volunteers, SHG, parents , Project staff ) One Vision centre is established, clinical & functional assessment is done, children are enrolled in regular schools & are provided with education materials.
